About The Event
Students will have a chance to discuss the controversial novel by Angie Thomas, talk about racism in America, and engage in meaningful discussions about this book. Topics covered include racism, police brutality, protesting, belief systems, and how to improve our society.
The instructors teaching style is very laid back, but she also like to encourage learners to participate. Here is the course breakdown: Each week we will cover a different section of the book, read excerpts from the novel, and engage in small group and whole group discussions meant to make us think.
Week 1: Chapters 1-8
Week 2: Chapters 9-15
Week 3: Chapters 16-21
Week 4: Chapters 22-26 and End of the book projects presentations
Note: Cameras required to be turned on. PSV Cost: $40/student (normally $100).
Rules of Engagement
During class we will establish or review ground rules for respectful discussion of political dialogue in class. We emphasize that the goal of the work in this lesson is to increase understanding and that hateful or derogatory speech of any sort is not acceptable. We remind students that a piece of art does not owe readers consideration of every perspective; its responsibility is to present its perspective. Readers, however, can and should bring multiple perspectives to interpreting the work as long as their perspectives are grounded in facts and are presented respectfully.
Any required experience or knowledge learners need?
This is a very controversial book and does contain profanity and drug use, this may make some families uncomfortable; but the issues of racism and how to discuss it makes the book one every high school student should read.
About the Class Instructor: Iman Alleyne -- I currently teach students throughout grades Preschool to 5th including students who have special needs. Over the past 4 years I started a Waldorf, Reggio, and Montessori inspired nature based program for kids under the age of 5 and have also started homeschool programs for kids over 5 years old called Kind Academy. I have homeschooled my own 3 children ages 4, 6, and 9 years old over the past few years as well. I recently co-authored a book called African Americans: Why We Homeschool and How To Homeschool in Florida. I love helping families transition to homeschooling so they can feel confident in their abilities as a homeschool parent. You can see more about what our organization does at www.kindacademy.org. I earned my Master's in School Counseling and my Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies with a major in Education. My educational philosophy is one of using project based learning as well as place based education to enhance learning across subject matters. I am a strong believer in children having choice and voice in how they learn and encourage self-directed learning among my students. I like to motivate my students using goal setting and playing educational games to keep learning fresh and fun.
I am certified in the following: School Counseling K-12, Special Education K-12, Elementary Education K-6 and was required to take classes on cultural competence, diversity, inclusion, and African-American History while receiving my Master's so that I could teach students of marginalized groups.
My favorite hobby is riding a scooter around my neighborhood with my 3 boys! I am sure I look kind of silly riding around, but it is so much fun to feel the wind as I zoom by! I am also an avid Tik Tok Teacher! I absolutely love to dance and love teaching dance to students. It is such a great way to bond with them and build relationships.
